The Albanian opposition has requested the introduction of the biometric identification of the voters in addition to the electronic voting and counting in the coming elections. The proposal was made in the table for the electoral reform with the participation of four representatives from the majority and the opposition.

“The united opposition today made a proposal for one of the main issues of the opposition agenda in the electoral reform. Ever since 2016 we have been requesting the biometric identification of the voters, and electronic voting and counting”, said Oerd Bylykbashi, the representative of the Democratic Party.

“It is a detailed proposal, quite clear and simple to put into life, absolutely doable, which would enable moving away the hands of the mobsters we have seen in the past filling the ballot boxes by voting more than once in behalf of the Albanian expats abroad”.

Bylykbashi said these problems look banal, but as a matter of truth they are “the cancer of the voting process and later of the counting process” and Albanians will continue to suffer “from unacceptable and incredible elections” unless such problems are solved.

Damian Gjiknuri, representative of the ruling Socialist Party said the majority agrees “in principle for the compromise, but it needs time and the electoral process should not remain hostage to technology”.
