Albanian President Ilir Meta has appealed to Edi Rama’s government to abandon the so-called anti-libel legislation and revise the entire package, supporting the concern of journalist and Reporters without borders (RSF).

Meta said Albania has made steps backs each year concerning the media freedom and this has been noted recently also by the World Index of Media Freedom.

"I am deeply concerned by Albania’s regress year after year in rapport with media’s freedom and independence”, Meta wrote. “It is unacceptable and requests an immediate response and reaction by all. I fully support the warning of RSF that the so-called “anti-libel” package will only deteriorate the current situation of the media and reporters in Albania”.

“I appeal to the government to back off and revise the package because it violates the fundamental constitutional principles of a democratic country; violates the freedom of expression, press and information; is in contradiction with the jurisprudence of the Constitutional Court; violates the standards of the European Convent of the Human Rights”.
