Speaking at the “Forum of Citizens and MPs” held in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, opposition leader Sali Berisha accused Edi Rama of co-governing with the criminal underworld and allowing state institutions to be captured by a drug-driven economy.

Berisha said that narcotics trafficking has distorted the economy, shut down businesses, fueled emigration, and impoverished hundreds of thousands of Albanians. He described parliament as having been turned into a misused and subservient institution, stressing that the opposition and citizens will not allow it to become an instrument of the government.

He called on Albanians not to accept the normalization of this situation and to continue the political battle until, as he put it, “the dark era of this gang comes to an end.”

Excerpts from the speech of Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha:

Friends, the second terrible weapon of this gang is drugs. What happens with drugs? The euro collapses because drug money arrives by the container-load. Hundreds of export businesses go bankrupt. Thousands of workers lose their jobs and leave the country. They leave because their workplaces are destroyed. What else happens? The euro depreciates by 35 percent. Pensioners who survive on support from their families lose 35 percent of their income, they become 35 percent poorer. What else? Sky-high construction prices, because for drug barons, money is no obstacle. What else? Drug money rules. Drugs kill at the airport, drugs kill in Elbasan, they kill everywhere, killing anyone. And Edi Rama governs together with them. Will we accept this? No, never. He has turned parliament into the most ridiculous and shameful institution in the country. But parliament is your representative, your vote, your will. Will we allow him to use parliament the way he is using it now? No, never. Therefore, time is on our side. Their time is over. Their era is a dark one, and they must answer for the dark deeds they have inflicted upon the Albanian people.
