The Electoral College will decide today on the lawfulness of June 30 as the date for the conduct of the local elections in Albania. The College will start by assessing the request made by the Party for National Unity (PUK) to unregister from the elections in compliance with the Presidential Decree of June 10 that postponed the elections.

One of the members of the Electoral College, Artur Malaj, asked about the validity of the Presidential Decree which revoked the previous Presidential Decree that set June 30, 2019 as the date of the elections and which organ has the competence to change the date of the elections.

A member of the Central Electoral Commission (KQZ), Olsi Peto responded that there is no organ to do that. “There is no precedent for the revocation of the decree on the date of the elections. Concerning the change of the date, it was changed in 2017 with a President’s Decree, which also set a new date for the elections”.

The Electoral College is discussing now about the fate of the elections of June 30, for which Albanian Premier Edi Rama said will go ahead as planned.
