Italian national Anti-Mafia Prosecutor Franco Roberti’s concern was added today to the serious allegation made last night by OSCE Ambassador Bern Borchardt about the two billion Euros generated from cannabis traffic and that will presumably be used by the government to buy the June elections.

Roberti said the cultivation of narcotic plants in Albania has tripled. The Italian Anti-Mafia Prosecutor arrived urgently in Tirana to meet Albanian Attorney General Adriatik Llalla. Beyond Roberti’s statement about the drugs triplication, which is a common knowledge denied only by Edi Rama, specialized agencies of the countries that are destinations for the Albanian marijuana, are investigating for the reasons why this criminal phenomenon has reached its current dimensions.

“Traffic of narcotics between Albania and Italy has increased. We need, along with the Albanian colleagues, to understand which the reason for the traffic growth is and at the same time what we can do to enhance our strategy and cooperation. Italy has shown interest in cooperation and in nominating a judge near the Albanian Ministry of Justice. We are interested to find out how we can cooperate and fight the traffic. The quantity of drugs cultivated in Albania has tripled”, Roberti said.

He implied the initiation of a joint investigation with the Albanian Prosecution Office to find out the organizers, investors and benefiters of this giant criminal industry.

SYRI.net contacted the Prosecution Office, where sources confirmed that the investigation has already started.

“It’s true there is an Italian-Albanian investigation under way, which includes the criminal organizations and their activity from planting to the transport of cannabis in huge quantities to Italy and other countries. We have enough evidence this is not a sporadic phenomenon, but a well-organized activity”, the source told Syri.net.

Asked if state structures, like police or customs, are implicated, the source responded that “segments from them are parts of the organization”.

Tons of cannabis has been sequestered off Italian shores this month only. These figures and the Italian Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s words bring down the figures and statements of State Police, Premier Edi Rama and Italian Guardia di Finanza, made in October 2016, that 99.8% of photographed cannabis cultivation area has been eradicated.
