After the European Union made its position clear, singling out Montenegro for faster integration and stating plainly that without a real fight against organized crime and corruption Albania has no clear path forward, having effectively been branded a “narco-state” by many Western countries, the man widely seen as responsible for that stigma has begun laying the groundwork to shift the blame for his failures onto the European Union.
In a selfie video posted on social media, Rama suggested that the goal of closing negotiations by 2027 may not be achieved, and in doing so attempted to portray EU leaders as unreliable. “You know how these people are, sometimes they walk away from agreements,” Rama said.
Excerpts from Rama’s statement:
“I have maintained my position clearly, directly, without gloves, because as I have told my friends and colleagues in the EU, I say what I think and then I do what they say, in the sense that we do our homework properly. The opening of cluster chapters is encouragement for us.
I have repeated my position that the European Commission should stick to the agreement to close negotiations by 2027, because you know how these people are, sometimes they back out of agreements.
I have emphasized that the integration of the Western Balkans must be accelerated, and I have emphasized that we will continue our efforts in what they like and are accustomed to summarizing as the ‘fight against organized crime and corruption,’ but it is much more than that.”
