Freedom Party Chairman Ilir Meta remembered November 22, 1998 today, the day when Albania became with a Constitution after a popular referendum.  Speaking in a press conference today, the former President of Albania said this is a historic day, but also expressed his sadness that it was the last time when the Albanian people could exert its right for a referendum, which is its right every time the political class is out of control.

“It was one of the most positive events for democracy, for our efforts to establish the rule of law, and of course it deserves to be remembered, but also an analysis is needed, because from that day 24 years ago Albania has held no other referendums regardless of the fact that the People of Albania put the referendum in the Constitution of the Republic as a right to exert any time the political class would get out of the Sovereign’s control”, said Meta.

“In these 24 years without a referendum and today without accountability at every local and central level we find ourselves in a very dramatic situation, which is not the first time, with the flood that did not come from the man or God, but came only from the corruption that we have exposed repeatedly, especially regarding the bad management of the energy sector”.
