The Voice of America published today details from an assessment of the US intelligence that Russia has paid over $300 million to influence politicians in more than 24 countries. A source from the US administration said Russia paid $500,000 to the Democratic Party to help winning the 2017 general elections.
The Democratic Party distanced itself from the then-Chairman Lulzim Basha who was responsible. An inquiry file was opened in the United States, but he managed to escape investigation in Albania with the help of the government.
However, Basha’s announced visit to the United States was canceled, because “he was afraid he would be arrested”, as former Premier Sali Berisha said last December.
Speaking to host Çim Peka on Çim Peka LIVE on Syri TV, Berisha said Basha canceled a number of planned travels to the United States.
“I understood he was refused the visa. There were a number of reasons, but he canceled to trips there. Three weeks ago, a person that was waiting him there said he went to the airport with a limousine for him but he (Basha) did not come because he was afraid he would be arrested once he set foot on American soil”, Berisha said last December.
“(Then-US) Ambassador Lu told me it was about the Russian money. I objected him, because I believed Lulzim Basha, and I made 10 public statements because I believed Basha’s variant. I couldn’t believe Donald Lu’s version and I could not believe the party chairman to reach at the point of being paid by Russians, but I was wrong. Later, a friend of mine from the United Sates called me and said Lulzim Basha would be sued criminally but I did not believe him. He haven’t spoken since”.
