Disgraced chairman of the Democratic Party Lulzim Basha finally has announced he decided to step down from his post. It is only a formal decision because Basha’s chairmanship was over since December 18, when the party membership ratified the decision to discharge him, taken one week earlier, on December 11, 2021, in the extraordinary Democrat National Assembly.
Basha announced his decision today in a meeting with a few MPs, the party executive, and the College of the Chairpersons, appointed by him.
Under Basha’s lead, the Democratic Party has known only defeats, the latest in the mayoral by-election of March 6, where it ended third for the first time ever since its creation, behind the ruling Socialist Party and the opposition coalition the House of Freedom, led by former Democrat chairman Sali Berisha.
The House of Freedom candidate won the mayoral election in Shkodra, traditionally known as a Democrat stronghold. That didn’t help Basha’s candidate from ending third, even behind the Socialist Party candidate.
