Former Minister of the Interior Saimir Tahiri has been sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison after the Special Appellation Court of Crime and Corruption found him guilty on the charges of abuse of office. The Court decided Tahiri benefited from the criminal activity of his cousins, the brothers Habilaj, international drug traffickers.
Tahiri will serve his sentence in a prison of normal security.
The first instance court also had found Tahiri guilty for the same charges and sentenced him under the same terms, but converted the prison sentence into community service.
The Special Appellation Court cancelled the conversion into community service and Tahiri will spend 3 years and 4 months in prison. The former minister was handcuffed in the courtroom and sent to the prison 313 in Tirana.
