Democratic Party chairman Lulzim Basha has addressed a letter to all the banks operate in the country and to the Governor of the Bank of Albania Gent Sejko to express the opposition’s concern for the money laundering through licensed activities or controlled by the public sector.

Basha highlights that, from the illegal activity of drugs production and trafficking from Albania in the recent years, one billion Euros have been generated and a good part of it has been used “to control government officials and public servants with the intention of laundering the money generated from the drugs cultivation and production and/or corruption”.

Basha also pointed out the repeated warnings of the opposition that the “banking industry is the mos exposed to the collusion of corrupt officials with certain companies that use the construction industry to launder the money earned through illegal activities”.

The opposition leader writes that financing such activities not only shouldn’t be allowed but it would also be a criminal offence by the person or institution that has participated.
