Albanian President Ilir Meta has urged the Albanian government to renounce the bill on tax amnesty. Meta posted a number of arguments against the government’s initiative as well as the appeal for the government to apologize to all the honest Albanian citizens for this undeserved provocation.

“I have followed attentively the reactions of foreign and domestic experts, also the official warning from the European Union, about the bill on fiscal and penal amnesty”, President Meta wrote on his official Facebook page.

“They warned that through this legislation:

The criminal underworld would be clearly favored, offering the possibility for the money earned during the years from the criminal activity of individuals or structured groups to invade the domestic economy, and in particular the financial market, legally.

The honest entrepreneurship and the free domestic initiative would take a direct hit.

The serious foreign investments in Albania would be discouraged further.

The entire economy would be criminalized and consequently the entire Albanian society, by exposing the country as a destination that favors the activity of the international criminal organizations.

The wrong and very dangerous perception would be created that every criminal activity and its products will be always amnestied in the future.

The efforts to fight organized crime would be undermined.

The cooperation with partner countries and the process of EU integration would be damaged.

Albania’s image as a NATO member and the untarnished image of all the honest Albanians would be be seriously compromised”.

Meta wrote he shares the same concerns and urged the government to act according to the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund and of the European Union.
