Democratic Party Chairman Sali Berisha said today he has no hard feelings towards President Ilir Meta for the presidential decree he signed in the Albanian consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Meta signed the decree to release the presidential candidate Bajramn Begaj from his military duty as the Chief of Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces. It opened the way to Begaj’s election as the new President in the fourth round of voting in the parliament.

The opposition said the decree was anti-constitutional because it was signed outside Albania.   

Berisha added there was a possibility to go to the fifth and last round for the election of President Meta’s successor.

“I have no hard feelings towards Meta. I only wanted to push it to the fifth round and there was a chance it could fail”, said Berisha.
