The historic leader of the Albanian Democrats Sali Berisha has been reelected chairman of the Democratic Party after winning Sunday’s election.

43,680 party members participated in the election today to choose between the two candidates, Berisha and Ibsen Elezi.

Berisha won 40,820 votes, equal to 93.45% of the total, against 2,532 votes (5.8%) for Elezi. 328 votes resulted invalid.

The Commission of the Organization of the Electoral Operations declared Sali Berisha as the winner of the race for the new chair of the Democratic Party.

Democrat MP Albana Vokshi announced the results of the election. She said it was the most transparent and credible electoral process ever.

“The whole hierarchy of the Democratic Party was elected based on the one-member-one-vote principle. The Democrats demonstrated today with their votes that the party belongs to them”, Vokshi said.

Berisha returns as chairman of the Democratic Party nearly nine years after his resignation in July 2013 after the loss in the general elections.
