The Union of the University Teachers in Albania has given two days to the government to meet their demands, after which they will start a hunger strike. Teachers and school staff have been in strike and have boycotted classes demanding better salaries, but their demands have been refused by Premier Edi Rama, who instead warned vetting of teachers’ second undeclared jobs will take place.

Head of the Union of the University Teachers Aleksandër Kovaçi said “we are giving two day to the Albanian government to find a way to meet our demands”.

“So far, the government has shown it has no ears to listen to our demands, it has no eyes to see, neither feelings and will to react and communicate for the solution of the most elementary demands. In these circumstances, after long discussions with Union representatives and academic personnel, a hunger strike was proposed ad the only form of a peaceful movement that may affect the domestic and international opinion to make the Albanian government and politics put education as its priority”.
