Former Albanian President Ilir Meta has filed a penal complaint against the members of the Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents. Meta, now chairman of the Freedom Party, had already declared last month he would file the lawsuit in September over allegations he had served as an associate of the secret communist police, Sigurimi, in his youth in the late 1980s.

“Fellow citizens,

Today I filed a criminal complaint against the members of the Authority for Information on Former State Security Documents over serious and intentional infringements of the organic law on the files of the former State Security; over the blatant manipulations and falsifications with the intention of political blackmail on account of (Premier) Edi Rama.

For other details I will hold a press conference in function of transparency before all Albanian citizens”, Meta wrote in his message announcing the complaint.

In the last days of Meta’s term as President of the Republic in July, voices spread about his alleged cooperation with Sigurimi when he was still a University student, which Meta denied categorically and warned he would press charges against the culprits.
