A prosecutor with links to the criminal underground has been appointed as acting head of Tirana’s Prosecutor Office replacing Elisabeta Imeraj which was dismissed after pressure from the government and international monitoring mission. Arenc Çela will replace Imeraj until a new prosecutor is elected.
Çela passed the vetting in March 2021 among many problems but there was no complaint for him from the International Monitoring Board. In the vetting process, the links to criminal individuals, both blood and social relations, are seen as unfitting, but they were not considered in Çela’s case.
His name has been mentioned a few times in relation to deeds from his relatives.
His uncle, Maksim Çela, was found guilty for the murder of the police effective Kledi Bano in Lushnja and for putting a quantity of explosive at the town’s stadium.
The prosecutors of Serious Crimes used the testimony of the collaborator of justice Petrit Lici for Maksim Çela’s conviction.
Prosecutor Çela has been mentioned also in relation with his brother-in-law, Dardan Ahmeti, who was accused of international drug trafficking but later the charges were dropped.
