Major General Bajram Begaj, currently the Chief of Staff of the Albanian Armed Forces, was elected the new President of Albania after the Parliament voted his candidature with 78 votes.
83 Members of the Parliament participated in the special session for the election of the President. 4 voted against Begaj, 1 abstained. The opposition led by the Democratic Party abandoned the session, saying the candidature supported by the ruling Socialist Party was anti-constitutional.
The opposition said Begaj could not be a candidate for the post of the President because he occupied the post of the Chief of Staff of the Army in the moment when he was proposed as a candidate.
Begaj will take the oath as the new President of Albania on July 24 when the term of incumbent President Ilir Meta expires.
