Former President of Albania Bujar Nishani passed away today from post-Covid complications at the age of 55.

Mr. Nishani became the youngest Head of State in Albania when he was elected President of the Republic in 2012, at the age of 46.

Nishani was born in Durrës on September 29, 1966.

He graduated in the Skënderbej Military Academy in Tirana in 1988. Until 1996 he worked in the Ministry of Defense and in the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs in the Directorate of Relations with NATO. In 1996, Mr. Nishani graduated his post-university studies in the United States.

In 2004 he graduated in the Law School in the University of Tirana.

He had a rich political career which he started in 1991 by adhering to the Democratic Party. In 2005 he was elected a Member of the Albanian Parliament for the Democratic Party.

During the eight years of the Democratic Party government he held the posts of the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Justice.

In July 2012, he was elected President of the Republic, till July 2017.

After the end of his Presidential term, Nishani returned to the Democratic Party with the duty of the Chairman of the National Council.

He is survived by his wife Odeta, his son Ersi, and daughter Fiona.
