Five reasons why a Trump presidency may be more awesome than awful

Five reasons why a Trump presidency may be more awesome than awful

By Tim Stanley - 07/01/2017

Congress has certified the Electoral College result; Donald Trump will become president in 13 days time. The End, say the liberals, is nigh. Will there be war with China? Russia? Hard to say; Mr Trump always defies expectations. My prediction is that he’ll start a nuclear war with someone totally unexpected. Israel, perhaps. Or Djibouti.

But every radioactive cloud has a silver lining, and the Trump presidency could turn out to be more awesome than awful. Here are five good things that I’m hoping will happen.

1. His tax plan kickstarts the US economy

Trump’s proposals are the most ambitious since Ronald Reagan, including a simplification of seven tax bands to three while cutting rates; abolition of death duties; and corporation tax will dive from 35 per cent to 15 per cent.

The Democrats will portray this deficit driver as a giveaway to the rich. But it has the capacity to spark an investment and consumer boom just as the UK begins negotiating a US/UK trade deal.

2. Trump gives America a lick of paint

Its roads are crumbling; trains crawl; airports look unsafe. Trump has promised to update infrastructure and create those blue-collar jobs that voters miss. Alas, this is the part of the Trump manifesto that is least likely to see the light of day.

The sum he’s earmarked for rebuilding has already fallen from $1 trillion to $550 billion, and most of that is actually tax credits to bribe private investors. But financial returns are limited, so don’t expect enthusiasm from business.

3. Abortion gets rarer

The numbers of terminations have actually been falling under Barack Obama, thankfully, but the Democrats have resisted attempts to remove public funding – putting pro-life taxpayers in a horrible position.

Trump and the Republican Congress should cut the money supply. Paul Ryan, the Speaker, has said he wants to strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood, which is a good sign.

The news comes just after a House panel detailed what it claimed to be further evidence that this vile organisation profits from the sale of body parts.

4. American foreign policy is reset

I’ve lost count of the number of people, many of them liberals, who have said to me: “I’m sad Trump won but at least we’ve dodged a war with Russia.” It’s possible to believe that Vladimir Putin is a bad individual while acknowledging that conflict with Moscow would be bad for humanity. China, meanwhile, needs to learn that it cannot always get its way. Trump’s phone call with Taiwan was a bold and brilliant move.

5. The Left-wing culture war rubbish stops

It’ll be nice to have a president who calls a terrorist a terrorist and Christmas Christmas. I look forward to Trump dressing up as Santa Claus later this year at the White House, and handing out Trump branded presents made in… well, you know where. /The Telegraph/
