For several weeks, a small group of neo-Marxists and environmental activists had been protesting in Zvërnec, where a tourist resort connected to members of President Trump's family is planned to be built. No one paid much attention to them until the day security personnel dragged one of the protesters along the ground. This brutal violence against protesters served as a catalyst and ignited social media.
The younger generation, or Gen Z—largely shaped by these social networks—flooded the streets of Tirana, protesting against violence, in defense of the environment, against the lack of clarity regarding the ownership of the land on which the project is to be built, against the government's abuse of strategic investment projects, against oligarchs, organized crime, and the government's misuse of public assets for the benefit of its clients.
Yes, there were also voices opposing the specific project itself. As you can see, these are wounds inflicted by the government of Edi Rama and have nothing to do with President Trump, his family members, or the United States of America.
On the fifth day of the protests, the protesters put forward political demands. First and foremost, they demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Rama and his government. Their other demands concern ending governmental abuse in public investments, corruption, property theft, and the strategic investments framework.
Edi Rama belongs to the network of the globalist left. His government does as well. International left-wing media outlets, for their own political reasons, rushed to transform this protest against a left-wing government into a protest against members of President Trump's family.
Likewise, the moment the protesters began articulating political demands—first and foremost Rama's resignation—the Prime Minister himself emerged and advanced the first falsehood, claiming that these protests were directed against President Trump rather than against him. Nothing could be more untrue, malicious, or perverse than this lie by the Prime Minister.
The second falsehood came when, exploiting the global geopolitical situation, he claimed that Iranians were behind the protests.
The protesters' second demand is the repeal of the Strategic Investments Law. This law was enacted by Edi Rama many years before members of President Trump's family even became familiar with Albania. It was adopted in order to reward political clients and facilitate the appropriation of public property for the benefit of the Prime Minister's personal associates.
The protesters' third demand concerns the repeal of the Mountains Package, another initiative by Rama designed to transfer public property to his clients in mountainous regions. Jared Kushner has no connection whatsoever to this initiative and no interest in it.
Unfortunately, it must be emphasized that the Prime Minister also used both the initiative and the Kushner project to entrap the latter.
First, it should be clarified that the government did not amend the Protected Areas Law (the environmental argument) in order to favor members of the President's family. Rather, through his own political maneuvering, Rama used their project as an argument and a shield to amend that law, whose effects extend not only to Zvërnec but throughout Albania, enabling him to appropriate public property for himself and his clientele.
Second, Prime Minister Rama's connections with international drug cartels, including those operating in Latin America, are a matter of public knowledge. Again, through his own political calculations, Rama encouraged and directed leaders of these international drug cartels to acquire properties around the area where the Kushner project was located so that, at a later stage, they too could build and launder their money there.
In doing so, Rama not only cynically used Mr. Kushner's legitimate project to shield his own clients from the criminal world, but also attempted, in a particularly damaging manner, to tarnish the reputation of the President and his family.
At the protest site, people are also protesting against the administration of hormones to children and adolescents for gender transition. How can this be considered an anti-Trump protest?
My nephew and niece have been present in the square since the very first day. They are not protesting against Trump; they are protesting against Rama.
Albanians are the most pro-American nation in Europe. Therefore, these protests are not directed against President Trump, against American investments, or against the United States. They are protests against Rama.
It is Rama who is facing these protests, yet he is attempting to portray them as protests against the President.
