Last afternoon, the United States Embassy in Albania issued an alarming message regarding security in the country.
The notice emphasized that groups linked to Iran may target facilities associated with the United States or elements of the Iranian opposition in Albania.
The embassy urged heightened caution in crowded areas such as shopping centers, hotels, restaurants, and tourist zones, a clear signal that the threat is not theoretical, but concrete and potentially imminent.
However, instead of treating this warning with the utmost seriousness such a situation demands, the response of the Albanian government was marked by a dismissive and relativizing tone. At its core, the message conveyed is that Albanian institutions are either unable to grasp the gravity of such an alert or choose to downplay it for political reasons.
This approach not only reflects irresponsibility but also raises questions about the state’s actual capacity to guarantee security at a time when warnings come from one of the countries with the most advanced intelligence structures in the world, the United States of America.
Prime Minister Edi Rama and his communications apparatus appear to opt for irony or trivialization of such signals, treating them as routine propaganda rather than as an alarm bell for a situation requiring maximum transparency, vigilance, and responsibility.
In a context where Albania is frequently cited by this embassy for evident problems such as corruption, drug trafficking, and organized crime, such a reaction is not merely inappropriate, it is dangerous. When serious warnings are treated lightly, the risk does not disappear; on the contrary, ignoring them may lead to increasingly uncontrollable situations.
Below is the message from the Government’s Official Communications Agency distributed to several media outlets in Tirana:
“The U.S. Embassy regularly issues such alerts, even when opposition groups take to the streets, burn garbage bins, or throw Molotov cocktails to make headlines in foreign media. However, the law enforcement agencies of the Republic of Albania have no concerning information regarding this speculation by the U.S. Embassy. Therefore, we invite American citizens not to miss any of the wonderful opportunities Albania has to offer, with its countless tourist destinations, unmatched hospitality, and excellent cuisine,” the Agency for Media and Information stated.
