The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said that Prime Minister Edi Rama’s dismantling of the integration process is pushing Albania into a “completely different orbit.”
He warned that the opposition’s response to these actions would be a peaceful uprising until Rama is removed from office.
Berisha added that the opposition is aware of developments within European chancelleries and the EU, but believes the prime minister’s departure will not come from abroad.
He criticized Rama for failing to meet integration criteria, saying Albania’s geostrategic position is its only advantage. Berisha also stressed that the opposition had previously warned about Rama’s violations of the very reforms he had promoted.
BERISHA’S STATEMENT:
Marsi Korreshi, SYRI TV: Mr. Berisha, if faced with a potential risk to Albania’s EU accession negotiations, and Edi Rama chooses to sacrifice the country’s integration to protect and not dismiss Belinda Balluku, what will be the opposition’s response?
Sali Berisha: The opposition’s response is one and only one: a peaceful uprising until his removal.
We have been informed and are aware of developments in European chancelleries and within the EU, but we are certain that regardless of any decisions, no one will come to remove him, we will remove Edi Rama ourselves.
This has always been our position. Of course, it is very, very bitter, because dismantling the process pushes Albania absolutely into a completely different orbit.
But one thing is clear: in writing and verbally, before you and in other very important forums, we warned that this country, this government, and this regime absolutely fail to meet any of the integration criteria, except for Albania’s geostrategic position.
We said this even when Edi Rama was being hailed as an inspiration for the reforms he claimed to have carried out. Now he is trampling them underfoot, the very reforms he once presented as extraordinary. This is who Edi Rama is today.
They are realizing it now, albeit a bit late. It was certainly our duty to be the first, and we were.
