Edi Rama is among the few European leaders who have not reacted following the arrest of Nicolás Maduro by U.S. special forces, carried out on the orders of President Trump. Maduro is accused of narco-terrorism, the destruction of democracy, and the persecution of political opponents.

Some time earlier, however, in his capacity as prime minister, Rama also became the first European leader to attack Donald Trump as a candidate for the 46th president of the United States, running against Joe Biden.

Rama used undiplomatic and aggressive language toward President Trump, saying, ‘God forbid he wins the election.’

Rama made these statements while acting, critics say, as a proxy of Trump’s greatest enemy in the United States, George Soros. He repeated his attacks and contempt toward President Trump with mockery several months ago at an international summit, in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron. However, on the day of Maduro’s arrest, a clear and firm message was sent to world leaders who attempt to ‘play games’ with the United States and President Trump by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stressed at a press conference that the current American president is a man of action who does not tolerate challenges.

Rubio underscored the warning during President Donald Trump’s press conference, using the case of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro as a prime example of the consequences of rejecting peaceful solutions.

He described President Trump as a leader who acts decisively when he says he will do something. ‘He is not someone who just talks, sends letters, and holds press conferences. When he says he will do something, he means it,’ Rubio said, adding that any threat to U.S. national security will be addressed without hesitation.

Marco Rubio’s statement:

‘I want to clarify one thing. Nicolás Maduro had many opportunities to avoid this. Many chances were given, many generous offers, but he chose to play games and received the response today. The message is clear. There are many people in the world today who want to play games. They are the ones who want to seize American companies in their countries, those who send their gangs into our country. They are people who think nothing will happen to them. I hope they now understand that we have a president, the 47th president of the United States, who does not play games. When he says he will do something, he means it and he acts. I have seen this process for 14–15 years. Everyone says ‘we will do this’ or ‘we will do that,’ but this is a president of action. This individual posed a threat to our national security, and our president addressed it. He is a president of peace. Maduro had many offers. He could have lived elsewhere, very happily, but he wanted to act tough with us. Now he will face far greater problems. The message to the world is clear: our president wants to be friendly with everyone, but do not play games.’

What Edi Rama said about Donald Trump several years ago:

‘God forbid America chooses Trump as president. Donald Trump is a threat to America and, without a doubt, a threat to Albanian-American relations. He would be a president who would cause great damage to America and would pose a real threat to Albanian-American relations,’ Rama said.

Rama made these remarks in an interview with his friend, journalist Baton Haxhiu.
