Relentless corruption scandals, Prime Minister Edi Rama’s resistance to allowing justice to proceed, and his refusal to authorize the arrest of the second-highest-ranking official in his government have driven Albania’s opposition to organize protests.

The Democratic Party and its allies have called on citizens across the country to take part in a national protest on Monday, describing it as a civic response to government corruption that has led to deteriorating living conditions, growing insecurity, and the denial of free and fair elections.

The opposition says Albanian households are increasingly burdened by uncontrolled inflation, stagnant wages, and minimal social assistance. At the same time, it argues, the government lives in luxury and abuses public funds, citing €190 million spent on the Llogara Tunnel and the multi-million-euro Tirana Outer Ring Road project, cases in which, it claims, Edi Rama is preventing the justice system from conducting investigations.

Security remains another major concern. According to the opposition, Euro-Atlantic reports and media outlets have highlighted that organized crime has access to the highest levels of power and has spiraled out of control, endangering citizens’ lives and property.

In its call to protest, the opposition stresses that no functional society can be built on normalized corruption. It alleges that ordinary citizens are prosecuted for minor issues, while individuals linked to those in power are shielded from justice and the law.

The opposition also claims that pressure on the public administration, the capture of media outlets, and the intimidation of civil society aim to silence citizens and suppress free expression, undermining democratic institutions, the separation of powers, and accountability.

The national protest will be held tomorrow, December 22, at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Prime Minister’s Office.
