The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, declared at a meeting of the party’s leadership that the opposition’s main agenda is the removal of the current government, with which, he said, free elections are impossible.
He stressed that the opposition has achieved several important successes, citing seven international resolutions that label Albania a narco-state and condemn the sham elections. Berisha said that the OSCE/ODIHR report constitutes the international legal basis for the opposition’s demand for a technical government and free elections.
According to him, the current majority rests on rigged elections and for this reason is a “pseudo-majority.” In this context, Berisha announced that the first nationwide general protest will take place on December 22, emphasizing that protests are the only path left for the opposition.
BERISHA’S STATEMENT:
In this complex and difficult situation, we have achieved some very significant accomplishments for ourselves in this battle.
There are seven international resolutions that sanction Albania as a narco-state.
They sanction sham electoral elections, some of them even before they were held.
They sanction the suppression and violation of political pluralism.
They sanction election results dictated by drug cartels.
They sanction the political persecution of the opposition.
And this is extraordinary support.
It is extraordinary support that we cannot use as a whining opposition, but will use as an inspiring opposition.
They are an inspiration for us.
Our voice and our efforts to restore the vote of Albanians, our struggle for this goal, have understanding and support.
We succeeded under difficult conditions, and despite those who are unhappy about it, in achieving what we achieved in 2001 with the OSCE/ODIHR report.
We defended the vote, and it was a very difficult battle.
Extremely difficult.
There are many factors that intervened, but the report emerged as it was and made a very significant contribution.
I believe that this report constitutes a solid legal foundation; it represents international law for our efforts toward a technical government and free elections in this country.
The majority stands on rigged elections.
It is a pseudo-majority; it is not a real majority.
This requires that each and every one of us here, and every leader, be clear that every minute, every hour, and every day, our agenda is the restoration of the vote and the removal of this government, with which there can be no elections.
It is our sacrifice to remove this government that does not allow elections.
It is our mission.
Those who are up to the height of this mission should commit.
Those who cannot respond should step aside.
Those who do not feel like missionaries should withdraw.
But this path is vital and decisive for the Albanian opposition.
Therefore, I believe that December 22 should be the date of the first nationwide general protest.
We must be clear that the main focus of our agenda will be protests only.
There is no longer any hope other than protests.
