Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha has posted a video on his social media accounts featuring scenes from last night's marathon protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office. In his address from the stage, Berisha accuses the government of corruption and poor-quality road construction.
Referring to recent landslides along several road segments, he questioned why geologically risky areas, such as the slopes on the GjirokastĂ«râTepelenĂ« axis or along the Nation's Highway, sustained no damage, while, as he put it, "Rama's and Harpy's roads collapsed one after another."
Berisha emphasized that the largest share of a road's cost goes toward stabilizing and protecting its slopes, accusing the government of inflating construction costs while producing unsafe infrastructure.
"Here's what's happened, after they've quadrupled the prices," he said in the video.
The post was accompanied by the caption: "Harpy's and 'Ramaduro's' roads collapse, like everything built on fraud and corruption."
Part of Berisha's speech:
"Of course, these past days we've had severe weather, no denying that.
But ask yourselves, why didn't the slopes on GjirokastĂ«râTepelenĂ« move?
Geologically speaking, that's the most dangerous slope.
We've had severe weather these days, so why didn't the slopes along the Nation's Highway give way? You know very well what those slopes look like.
Why didn't the slopes on the FratarâMemaliaj road move? Go and see for yourselves.
Yet Harpy's and Rama's roads collapsed one after another.
Yes, my friends, because when a road is built, most of the investment goes into stabilizing it, into protecting it from the slope.
The slope is even more important than the road itself.
So, look at what's happening now.
And it's happening because they've quadrupled the prices."
