The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, stated that even today there are ambassadors and high-ranking officials in Brussels who are upset with him because he openly denounces the phenomenon of the narco-state in Albania.
Berisha said that drugs have been more harmful to the country than any ideology or invader, starting with the massive cannabis cultivation in 2015, which spread from Pogon to the depths of the Alps.
The opposition leader stressed that drug billions do not create jobs; on the contrary, they destroy industrial and agricultural production as well as exports, pushing Albanians to leave the country.
Berisha also claimed that Edi Rama, as the successor of communist executioners, has built and maintained the narco-state in order to preserve power at any cost.
Full statement to the media:
‘Your question is a fundamental one, but as you know, this government was built through the process of creating the narco-state.
I tell the Albanian citizens that nothing is more toxic than drugs, more brutal than any ideology or invader to our national existence. Drugs, drugs and nothing but drugs.
In 2015, Albania was planted with cannabis from Pogon to the depths of the Alps, and this happened in front of the entire world. Some encouraged it; others remained silent.
And since that year, the billions from drugs have not created jobs; instead, they have destroyed thousands of jobs, ruined exports, undermined industrial production and agriculture, and driven Albanians to leave.
So, this was a process in which, we must admit, the opposition did not have the strength to stop it. But the opposition did not directly become a co-author of this process. No, we cannot say that.
The fundamental process that transformed Albania became the construction of the narco-state, and then Edi Rama, a successor of communist executioners, determined not to give up power at any price or under any condition.
This happened before the eyes of the entire world. Some helped Edi Rama do this; others helped with their silence.
Even today, there are ambassadors and senior officials in Brussels who are angry with me because I speak about the narco-state. Meanwhile, drugs have become a destructive force for our national existence, a destructive force for Albanian democracy. It is a more powerful factor in election outcomes than any political party.
This battle is difficult, but if we do not fight it, the UN has a grim prediction for Albania, a prediction that Albania will move toward extinction as a nation and as a country.’
