Head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group Taulant Balla started the today’s parliamentary session attacking Democratic Party Chairman Sali Berisha, saying he is tainting the parliament’s regulations because he is a persona non grata. However, Balla kept his mouth shut when Berisha counterattacked and accused him of solicitation of the murder of the lawyer Ravik Gurra in Elbasan. The opposition chief said Balla is the senior politician that stands behind serious crimes in Elbasan.

Berisha said Gurra had seen Balla’s name in the police wiretaps in 2016, which was the reason behind his murder three years ago, while he was in a bar. A notorious criminal of Elbasan, Ardian Çapja, accused of two murders, said recently in his trial that “after the massacre of February 3, 2016, I never left the house. With the late lawyer Ravik Gurra we received the investigative file of the incident of 2016 and there was the record of a high politician named Taulant. Later, we learnt that with an order of the Court of Elbasan the politician’s record was erased. The politician named Taulant phoned me and offered help, but I asked for nothing. I won’t say his full name because my family would be in danger”.

Çapja’s testimony – which Berisha was referring to – was a real bombshell and it is suspected it’s about Taulant Balla, a former leader of the Socialist Party in Elbasan, now head of the Socialist parliamentary group.

Balla has been repeatedly accused of supporting criminal groups in Elbasan that are hostile to Çapja clan, offering both police and politic protection, but this is the first time ever his name was mentioned in a courtroom by one of the protagonists of the conflict between the criminal groups.
