Former Albanian Premier Sali Berisha reacted immediately after Democratic Party Chairman Lulzim Basha’s declaration against calling a Democratic Party Convention. So far, Basha has ignored repeated calls from the party base for a referendum or an extraordinary convention to discuss about current chairman’s decision to expel former chairman Berisha from the Democrat parliamentary group under pressure from the US Embassy in Albania since the former Premier was banned to enter the United States accused of significant corruption. Basha said he will not allow a convention that will scrutinize the US government’s decisions.
Berisha responded by calling Basha Premier Edi Rama’s hostage and expressed his belief the convention will happen.
“After 8 years, Edi Rama continues to be in power because he’s been dealing with someone that is happy to stay even 80 in opposition”, Berisha said.
“The Democratic Party Convention will gather in accordance with the Democratic Party Statute and no one that is terrified by it can stop it. The Convention will not gather to scrutinize the decisions of any government, but only the decisions of Edi Rama’s hostage”.
“The Convention will also gather to rescue the Democratic Party from the deals of the hostage Basha with Edi Rama, and to restore the Democrats’ hope and dignity after four consecutive defeats against Europe’s most corrupt and incriminated regime. The Democratic Party does not need a leader that is held hostage, that bargains with Rama and declares the party base non-grata, terrified by it”, Berisha said.
