Albanian President Ilir Meta said the country has made a step back towards authoritarianism following the publication of the Freedom House Report on freedom in the world, where Albania decreased by one point.
Meta wrote Albania is ranked among hybrid regimes, adding that the demolition of the National Theater, the violation of protesters and the murder of 25-year-old Klodian Rasha for breaching the coronavirus curfew cannot be covered with propaganda.
"Albania one step closer to authoritarianism! Freedom House report lowers Albania even further for 2020, between HYBRID regimes! The demolition of the National Theater for clientelist interests, the violation of protesters, and the criminal murder of Klodian Rasha during the pandemic cannot be covered with propaganda. These and other serious incidents will never be amnestied and justice will be done for them”, Meta wrote.
“The deterioration of all indicators, especially the cruel violation of human rights, is a strong alarm bell for the installation of a police state, which I have long denounced. The Referendum of April 25, 2021 is a historic moment to give a new trajectory of democracy, rule of law and respect for human rights, in order to fulfill as soon as possible the conditions set by the European Union".
