Today marks the 30th anniversary of the day when Albanians overthrew the monument of communist dictator Enver Hoxha in the center of Tirana, whose power was installed in the country ever since the end of the World War II.

On February 20, 1991, thousands of citizens gathered in a huge rally that ended with the overthrow of the communism symbol in the Scanderbeg square.

It took place while the regime was living its last days, after having allowed the political pluralism following the students protests in December 1990.

Enver Hoxha’s monument overthrow originated in the hunger strike of hundreds of students and a petition signed by thousands to remove the name of the communist dictator from the University of Tirana.

Symbolically, February 20, 1991, marks the end of the communist regime in Tirana. One of the steel ropes that were used to pull down the monument is exhibited in the Section of Communist Terror in the National Historic Museum.
