Former Albanian Premier Sali Berisha said the anti-government demonstration of January 21st 2011 outside the prime ministry was not a violent protest but an attempted coup. He told host Çim Peka on Çim Peka LIVE on Syri TV he had required international investigation for the incidents and the murders of four participants, but Socialist Party chairman Edi Rama refused.

“The goal of the protesters was to occupy the prime ministry and this is not fantasy. They forced the gate open with a car and it’s known who brought it there. The National Guard, as it is well-known, has not other defensive means – no batons, no teargas, no spray – but the fire weapons, like anywhere in the world”, Berisha said.

“Whether the Guard members shot under lawful conditions or not, this is a case that has been investigated by (then-Prosecutor General) Ina Rama’s team. I’d like to remind you one thing: It was Sali Berisha the one that required international investigation for the incident. I requested it publically. I asked the EU and US representatives a neutral investigation of the event. The man that objected categorically the investigation through Ina Rama was Edi Rama. Partners told me the Prosecution, i.e. Edi Rama, did not accept the international investigation”.

Asked whether he ordered the Guard to fire, Berisha said the National Guard acts based on the law.

“There were hundreds of shots in the air, through the pine trees. Many ricocheted. There were bullets in my own office, also one floor above mine. The Guard is guided by the law and that law was not approved by my majority”, Berisha said. “Edi Rama made threatening declarations against the Guard. After eliminating the Guard chain, he was preparing to attack again”.
