Former Albanian Premier Sali Berisha has celebrated the completion of works for the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP), after it started transporting gas from Azerbaijan to Greece, Bulgaria and Italy on Thursday.

Connecting with the Trans Anatolian Pipeline (TANAP) at Greece's border with Turkey, TAP stretches across northern Greece, Albania and the Adriatic Sea before reaching Italy's coast. TAP will carry 10 billion cubic metres of new natural gas supplies per year from the Shah Deniz field in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea to markets in Europe.

Berisha wrote that the TAP project became the success it is only because it passes through Albania, based on an agreement his government signed in July 2013.

“The project became a success after a long and difficult marathon, full of obstacles that many times seemed insurmountable. After the Azeri government and President Aliyev, the government I headed supported more than anyone the project which looked liked it would be eliminated by the Russian Gazprom and the mega-project Nabuko”, Berisha wrote on his Facebook page.

“For years, the project had top priority, next to NATO membership and Kosovo’s independence in my personal and my ministers and advisers’ agenda in over 100 high level meetings”.

The former Prime Minister highlighted that the TAP Consortium investments for its construction in Albania were “from 2014 to 2020 the main voice of foreign investments in Albania”.
