Albanian Premier Edi Rama has reshuffled his cabinet after Gent Cakaj’s resignation as Acting Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
“Today I handed in my resignation to PM Rama as Acting Minister for Europe & Foreign Affairs. This was it, my friends: for various reasons. I thank you for the entire cooperation we have had,” Cakaj tweeted.
He will be replaced by Olta Xhaçka as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“It’s time to hand in the office to Olta Xhaçka, who will now serve as the Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs. I would like to thanks Gent, not only for the dignity he has shown in duty, but also for his commitment,” Prime Minister Rama wrote, also announcing that Niko Peleshi will be the new Defense Minister.
These changes, which come four months prior to the country's elections, are expected to be sent to the Presidency to be decreed by the President of the Republic.
After several protests over the fatal murdering of 25-year-old Klodian Rasha, the Minister of Interior also announced his resignation in December. Bledi Çuçi was later appointed as Albania’s new Minister of Interior.
