Former Albanian Premier Sali Berisha has condemned the transformation of a prison into a hospital for the treatment of inmates that are infected with coronavirus.

Berisha, a former cardiologist, said Premier Edi Rama, having no possibilities to build a new hospital, has left behind even the communist dictator Enver Hoxha in his inhumanity.

“The transformation of a jailhouse into a coronavirus hospital is an inhumane act that has gone beyond Hoxha’s dictatorship and marks a grave crime against humanity”, Berisha wrote on his Facebook page.

“Edi Rama’s criminal decision leaves behind the dictator Hoxha who, to speak the truth, had the hospital for the prisoners built within the Tirana civil hospital territory and the inmates that were hospitalized there received specialized help by physicians that were called at any time by the prison doctors”.

“Building a Covid-19 hospital within the prison territory for the inmates infected with Covid-19, without any hospital condition, means punishing them inhumanly and depriving them of medication and healthcare guaranteed by law… It is a grave criminal act in the level of crimes against humanity”.

Berisha appealed to the familiars of the prisoners to rally and protest, also denounce the case at all the international organizations of human rights. The former Prime Minister also appealed to the UN Commission for the Human Rights, the Helsinki Committee of the US Congress, the Committee against Torture, and WHO to interfere immediately and denounce Edi Rama’s barbarian act.
