Albanian President Ilir Meta defended the changes to the Penal Code, saying they were necessary in the fight against the spread of coronavirus.
“There was a vacuum in the Penal Code for the management of such a situation”, President Meta said in the Opinion show on TV Klan. “Then, one should not forget there is a difference between the proposals and the changes in the final version passed in the parliament”, said the President, referring to the changes made to the bill after his suggestions. Originally, the government had asked for imprisonment terms of 15 years for the persons who spread infectious diseases with serious consequences or death of other persons. After Meta’s proposal, the parliament voted for an eight year term in prison for the offense.
Meta added his actions have been and will always be in defense of the Constitution and it’s not about a “love period” with Premier Edi Rama.
