Albanian parliament approves changes to the Penal Code: Sentence up to 8 years in prison for the diffusion of coronavirus

The Albanian parliament passed today with only one vote against the modifications to the Penal Code, taking into account the proposals of President Ilir Meta as well.

The changes include imprisonment for a term up to eight years for the violators of the curfew imposed by the government in efforts to tackle the coronavirus spread. Earlier, the Socialist majority had proposed a term up to 15 years in prison if the violation of the curfew by a person caused the death of other persons.

The Article 89/b passed by the parliament in its extraordinary says today says:

The diffusion of contagious diseases

The deliberate diffusion of a contagious disease of high-level risk to health via acting or non-acting by a bearer person or by a person that intends its diffusion is punishable by a sentence of two to five years in prison.

When the offense has caused serious consequences for the health or is dangerous for the lives of people, it is punishable by a sentence of 3 to 8 years in prison.
