Deputy Chairman of the Socialist Party (PS) Taulant Balla said today President Ilir Meta can only wish the dissolution of the parliament but he cannot do it.

Balla said Albania is a Parliamentary Republic and as such it is the Parliament that can fire the president and not vice-versa.

“The Republic of Albania is a crystal clear Parliamentary one and the President elected by the Parliament of Albania is aware of the lack of right to have such an approach to the parliament. The parliament can fire the President and the process is certified by the Constitutional Court. The President can only wish to dismiss and dissolve the parliament. The President is a person under probe for continuous violations of the Constitution”, Balla said.

President Meta gave a two-week deadline to the Socialist majority to revise the modifications to the law on the Constitutional Court that were passed recently. Balla, who is also head of the Socialist parliamentary group, responded by saying the decree will be revised according to the Constitution and the Parliament Regulations.

“In my knowledge, the parliament always acts in constitutional ways, following the rules defined by the Constitution and the Regulation of the Parliament. If we are officially notified, the regulation says in the earliest sessions the Speaker introduces the decree and there’s a four-week procedure for its revisal. I hope there are arguments and not street language in that decree”, said Balla.
