The representatives of ethnic Albanians in Montenegro have expressed their objection to the mini-Schengen project in the Western Balkans, supported by Albanian Premier Edi Rama, saying it will benefit only Serbia. The representative of the commune of Tuz, Nikoll Camaj, said a strengthening of links among Albanians is a necessity.

“Maybe the Albanian government sees an interest for the moment there, but we do not see it”, he told the Albanian television Ora News. “It would be better to have a mini-Schengen pact for the (ethnic) Albanians of the North Macedonia, Kosovo, Valley of Presevo, and Montenegro”.

The former MP of the Montenegro parliament said Serbia is stronger than Albania economically speaking and for that reason Serbia would be a direct beneficiary of the mini-Schengen pact. However, Camaj said the biggest disappointment comes from remembering the past and the Serbian dream for the harbor of Durrës in the Albanian Adriatic coast.

"They who don’t know where they come from do not know where they’re going to. (Former Serbian Premier) Pasic, who was the biggest strategist in the Greater Serbia, saw Durrës as a Serbian gate (to the Adriatic)”. For Camaj, the minis-Schengen project is not only an idea of Belgrade but of Moscow too, adding that the decision for participation should not be let in the hands of one or a few politicians but rather be decided by the Albanian people in a referendum.
