Albanian President Ilir Meta has repeated today his concern for the political crisis in the country, reiterating that the elections of June 30 for mayors and municipal councils were illegitimate and October 13 is the constitutionally set date for the new polls.

Meta issued a Presidential Decree on June 10 to call off the elections of June 30 and on June 27 he issued another Decree to set the new date for the elections for local government in Albania.

Premier Edi Rama decided to go ahead with June 30 as the elections date despite the Presidential Decree and the opposition’s boycott.

However, the President has highlighted today that his Decree of June 10, which came into effect on June 11 after being published in the Official Gazette, is still in effect, because it has not been modified, canceled or overruled by the Electoral College or any court of law in the Republic of Albania, leaving it in effect and obligatory for anyone.
