The Conference of the Chairpersons in the Parliament has approved today the majority’s request for a motion in the Parliament of Albania which is expected to pass a resolution against President Ilir Meta’s decree to postpone the local elections of June 30. At first there were voices about a dismissal of the President, but the Socialist Party does not have the numbers to oust Meta, so they will need to satisfy with a resolution that appeals Meta to reflect on his decision. The meeting of the Chairpersons did not pass without debates. It is understood the head of the parliamentary Commission of Media, Fatjona Dhimitri, objected the “political trial” the majority is preparing for the President on Thursday’s session.

Reached by the Albanian daily Panorama, Ms. Dhimitri said that “only the Constitutional Court can express itself on the constitutionality of the President of the Republic”. She added it is improper for the parliament to discuss Meta’s decree and she will vote against a possible vote of confidence for the dismissal of the President.
