Former President of Albania Bujar Nishani said the Socialist majority in the parliament cannot dismiss President Ilir Meta unless the later commits a heavy violation of the constitution.

Albanian Premier Edi Rama told his party executive bureau today to start preparing Meta’s dismissal following his decree to postpone the June 30 elections. Speaking with Syri TV, Mr. Nishani said the President of the Republic “can be fired only for heavy infringement of the Constitution. He can be dismissed only when he commits a crime or national treason. These are the only two cases when the president can be dismissed”, Nishani said, asking: “Which of the two infringements has he committed? The President simply undid his former decree”.

Nishani added there were cases during his tenure as president when he was attacked for un-decreeing a previously signed decree.

“This is a public emotional attack and should they actually start it, the Republic would be under attack and the President has the right to protect against any step that threatens the Republic”, former President Nishani told Syri TV.
