Former Albanian Premier Sali Berisha has commented the Dutch request to the European Commission for a temporary suspension of visa-free travel in the Schengen Area for Albanian citizens.

Berisha said this is a heavy blow to the country’s European integration that could delay for years the opening of membership talks with EU.

“Only two days after the European Commission recommended the opening of negotiations with Albania, arguing that Albania has fulfilled the conditions, the Kingdom of the Netherlands rejects the recommendation. In an unprecedented act, the government of the Kingdom of the Netherlands deposited to the European Commission the official request to reinstall visas for the citizens of Albania because the country not only did not fulfill the conditions but has regressed dramatically”, Berisha wrote on his Facebook page.

Berisha, who was Prime Minister when EU decided for visa-free travel for Albanian citizens, blamed incumbent Prime Minister Edi Rama and his government’s links to crime and corruption. He added the Dutch proposal to the European Commission is a heavy blow that may close the door to the membership negotiations with EU for years.
