Former President of Albania Sali Berisha has remembered March 22, 1992, the day when the Democratic Party achieved its first election giving an end to the rule of the communist party for the first time since 1944.

Berisha was the chairman of the first opposition party that was founded in December 1990, following the protests of the students against Ramiz Alia’s regime. Alia stepped down after his party (later named the Socialist Party) lost and Berisha was elected President of the Republic. Today, Berisha wrote March 22 was “the day that separated Albanians from the most barbaric regime in Europe”.

“Happy March 22, the first day of Democracy, the day that separated époques and the Albanians from the most barbaric regime in Europe”, Berisha wrote on his Facebook page.
