19 thousand Albanian nationals have applied for asylum in a EU member country in 2018. The data have been published by Eurostat, with Albanians occupying the ninth position in the list, behind Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Nigeria, Turkey and Venezuela.

The number of Albanian asylum seekers has fallen compared to the previous years. This is due to the act that those who left from 2015 never returned to the country.

2015 holds the record with nearly 69 thousand applications, whereas 2016 and 2017 had 33 thousand and 26 thousand applications respectively.

A total of 580,800 foreign citizens have applied for asylum in a EU country during 2018, 11% less than 2017.
