Albania celebrates today December 8, 1990, the day when students of Tirana University rose against the regime, marking the beginning of the political pluralism and the end of the last communist dictatorship in Europe.

28 years later, former President and founder of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said those were some historic days.

“Days like this are days of memories, of impressions”, Berisha said today, speaking in the Student’s Town in Tirana, where the protests started 28 years ago.

“These are the days of the genesis. In 28 years we’ve had great days, blessed and hard days, but the days of December 1990 are the days of genesis of three decades of the Albanian Nation. For myself, they were the days in which I experienced the biggest miracle of my life”.

“The students were alone, only a few citizens were by their side, facing police and armored vehicles. The were invincible heroes, they confronted the wildest dictatorship in Europe. Later, they were joined by their fathers and flooded the streets to demand the political pluralism”, Berisha said.
