Descendants and people linked to the former communist dictatorship have been appointed as Albania’s ambassadors abroad by Foreign Minister Ditmir Bushati, whose father served as first secretary in several branches of the communist party.
Bushati has recently appointed Virgjil Kule – a journalist and former director of state television – as the new ambassador in Sweden. Kule is the son-in-law of Rita Marko, a former member of the Politic Bureau of the Party of Labour of Albania (the communist party), who died a few days ago.
However, Kule is not the first.
Ravesa Lleshi was appointed Albania’s ambassador to UNESCO a few months ago. She is the niece of Hysni Kapo, a powerful member of the communist party and close collaborator of Enver Hoxha until the former’s death in 1979.
Ambassador in Israel, Bardhyl Canaj, is the son-in-law of Lenka Çuko, also a member of the communist Politic Bureau in the 1980s.
