The Democratic Party (PD) has requested the interruption of the mandate of the temporary General Prosecutor Arta Marku and a vetting process for the head of the prosecution.

The parliamentary Council of Legislation gathered today to discuss about the Democrats’ proposal for modifications in the Constitution concerning the election of the General Prosecutor.

Democrat Deputy Oerd Bylykbashi said the interruption of Marku’s mandate is necessary for the institution to return to the rails of law and proposed that “the new prosecutor should be subjected to the vetting process and elected with 3/5 of the votes in the parliament”.

"No one can say if the current General Prosecutor can pass the vetting process”, Bylykbashi said. “As soon as the High Council of the Prosecution is established, let’s elect the new prosecutor and that would be a test for the majority if they really want independent justice”.
