It wasn’t a chess game, just a bluff. How Rama failed to involve the President in the violation of the Constitution

President Ilir Meta’s latest move of decreeing the release of Brigade General Sandër Lleshi from his military status fits with what he implied in the last night’s interview with journalist Eni Vasili that he is cooperating with the Ministry of Defense to find a positive solution, and a constitutional one.

The first ever rejection of a minister nominee by the president in the pluralist history of the country created such a controversy that it seemed like the country was in an institutional crisis.

Premier Rama himself and all his mediatic and politic entourage started an unprecedented campaign to turn the black into white. The “chess game” was played in such a way to give the impression it was the President that was violating the Constitution. It all happened in the absence of the only referee, which is the Constitutional Court.

But Ilir Meta, calm and determined, havening understood it was just a bluff to withdraw him as well in the systematic violations of the law and Constitution by the Prime Minister, insisted in the opposite: It is I protecting the Constitution.

“I am President to be the first to respect the Constitution of the Republic of Albania. There is no pressure that may influence me to violate the Constitution and I am ready to inform the Parliament should the Parliament demand explanations. I met with the Parliament Speaker. I am in the capacity of the President after my experiences as Prime Minister and Parliament Speaker”, Meta said.

“I know very well how the procedure of a minister’s appointment works. I know it from the Prime Minister’s position too. In the coming days you’ll have a correct and institutional response and I have no intention to be withdrawn in debates of speculative and political nature”, the President added.

The “institutional cooperation” happened today after Meta opened the way for decreeing Sandër Lleshaj as the Minister of the Interior. The developments showed the problem for the tricky situation was exactly at the executive and Premier Rama in person, who arrogantly and by personal order wanted to make minister an active General, in total violation of every law and of the Constitution of the Republic.

The request for Lleshaj’s release from his function as Brigade General was sent by the Ministry of Defense. There was also a public request by Rama, but it all occurred only after the President for the first time ever applied the Constitution and refused to sign a decree that would be a serious violation.

At first, the Prime Minister, despite knowing Lleshaj’s nomination as Minister of the Interior while keeping his military grade was anti-constitutional, tried to involve the President in the serious violation. The later, even though the situation was politicized, decided to obey the Constitution, rejecting Lleshaj’s name.

So, even though Edi Rama claims he was playing a “chess game”, was trying to play the poker bluff with President Meta instead, trying to treat him like a notary or “ceremonial”, even when the Prime Minister violates the Constitution.

Well, that would have really been a precedent!
